Make Money with Paulownia/Empress Tree Plantation

Paulownia Tree Plantation
Paulownia tomentosa (common names empress tree, princess tree or foxglove tree) is a deciduous tree in the familyPaulowniaceae, native to central and western China, but invasive in the USA. Paulownia tomentosa is the fastest growing tree in the world. Material quality of the paulownia wood is very special and perfect for wide range of applications. Compared with other species of wood.

Paulownia trees are part of about 17 species and belong to the family Paulowniaceae. These trees are native to China, are found in the region such as Laos and Vietnam, but are also found in Japan and Korea. Paulowina are deciduous trees and have a height of 12-15 m, the leaf is heart shaped and has a diameter of 15-40 cm. Paulownia trees are growing very rapidly in the first years of life grows about 3 m per year. Some species of Paulownia can be planted for timber and can be cut in less than five years. These trees are also called PHOENIX trees, due to their ability to regenerate very quickly.

The characteristic large size of the young growth is exploited by gardeners: by pollarding the tree and ensuring there is vigorous new growth every year, massive leaves are produced (up to 60 cm across). These are popular in the modern style of gardening which uses large-foliaged and "architectural" plants.

In China, an old custom is to plant an Empress Tree when a baby girl is born. The fast-growing tree matures when she does. When she is eligible for marriage the tree is cut down and carved into wooden articles for her dowry. Carving the wood of Paulownia is an art form in Japan and China. In legend, it is said that the phoenix will only land on the Empress Tree and only when a good ruler is in power. Several Asian string instruments are made from P. tomentosa, including the Japanese koto and Korean gayageum zithers.

The soft, lightweight seeds were commonly used as a packing material by Chinese porcelain exporters in the 19th century, before the development of polystyrene packaging. Packing cases would often leak or burst open in transit and scatter the seeds along rail tracks. This, together with seeds released by specimens deliberately planted for ornament, has allowed the species to become an invasive weed tree in areas where the climate is suitable for its growth, notably Japan and the eastern United States.

Paulownia Tree Plantation
Why to plant paulownia?

  • Paulownia tree is very advantageous, branches do not fall, do not mess where it is planted, it is also resistant to fire and water do not print.
  • Paulownia can be sold for pulp for paper manufacture, poles, building materials, plywood, furniture and its price is very high, in other words it is profitable.
  • Paulownia can be sold starting at 5 or 6 years of age.
  • Tree has a beautiful shape and easy to cut.
  • Paulownia leaves are rich in protein and can be used as fodder for some animals.

Light but tough

As one of the lightest wood on the earth, it is about 40% lighter than other species of wood. On the other hand, its toughness is good as well. Light but tough is the major advantage of paulownia wood, so it could be used for making aviation model, housing of precision instruments and etc.

No bending, no warp and keep its shape

Compared with other species of wood, paulownia wood presents characteristics as "no bending, no warp and keep its shape". The environment-friendly fan blade made of paulownia wood is favored by the market with no other timbers being able to substitute.

Humidity resistance and moisture proofing

Paulownia wood will be resistant to humidity & moisture and kept well after dying, which act as the top-grade material for lining board of passenger ship and bus, packing cases for aviation transport and water transport.

Fire resistance

Thermal conductivity of the paulownia wood is less than other species of wood. Burning point of other timbers is about 270 degrees Celsius, while the burning point of paulownia wood is up to 425 degrees Celsius. In the planting process, paulownia is not easy to be self-ignited. Moreover, it could be used as materials for wooden products resistant to elevated temperatures.

Abrasion-resistant

Paulownia wood is light but not easy to be worn out. The bellows (an ancient combustion appliance of China) made of paulownia wood is not easy to be worn out even though milled back and forth by the pull rod.

Beautiful texture and bright color

Texture of paulownia wood is beautiful and delicate with brightness of the spun silk and good natural patterns. It serves as the ideal material for costly furniture, stationery and sports equipment.

Strong ability for sound conduction

Acoustic quality of the musical instrument made by paulownia wood could keep in stable which regardless of weather changes. Boards of dulcimer, lute, liuqin and even the qinhu are all made of paulownia wood.

Easy to be carved and dyed

Paulownia wood is not easy to split but with soft wood quality, so it is suitable for processing, carving and dyeing. It is the special material for good quality paper and handicraft.

Air tightness and worm-eating resistance

In their daily lives, Chinese people are accustomed to use paulownia wood containers to store grain, which will protect grain from moisture, mildewing and worm-eating for a really long time.

Planting and caring paulownia elongata

Soil preparation:

  • Paulownia can be planted all year, during the early autumn or in the spring, depending on location.

  • The soil needs to be break new and you may put weed herbicide, after 6 or 8 weeks you can plant the paulownia plants;

  • The distance between trees should be 4 meters;

  • Next is digging the planting hole, dig a hole that is three to four times the width of the root ball and equally as wide;

  • After that, place the tree in the planting hole. After the tree is straight, add a small amount of the original soil to stabilize, put water in the hole also;

  • Watering is necessary in the first 8 to 10 weeks and should be continued during periods of drought. Fertilization should be done twice a year, once in late fall or autumn and then 3 months later

  • After 6 months after planting paulownia you may cut the plants at ground level, just to give a high quality wood, so this is not mandatory, do not worry, the plants grow back even faster.

After harvesting a mature tree

Harvested in shorter amount of time, regeneration from the remaining cut stump

Paulownia Tree Plantation

With other trees, as cedar, pine, etc, the absorption rate rises gradually after planting, maximizes at a certain growth point, and thereafter gradually decreases as the tree continues to age until it stabilizes at a certain level for the remainder of its life cycle. Therefore, in order to retain maximum carbon dioxide absorption, it would be better to continuously harvest and plant new trees. However, because the Super Paulownia can regenerate from the cut stump, and repeat the cycle of growth .there is no cost or time associated with planting a new tree. Additionally, high levels of carbon dioxide absorption are retained due to this unique ability to regenerate.
