How to Start Plastic Bottle Manufacturing Business

Plastic Bottle Manufacturing | Small Business IdeasSince its invention, Plastic has become an integral part of our everyday life. Plastic production is in high demand as it is used in various forms for modern innovation and many other fields as well. Everything from table and chairs in our living rooms to storage boxes in our kitchens are made of plastic. Being attractive, useful, light weight and low in cost, plastic product are a consumer’s delight. Plastic bottle is one of such products. These plastic bottles are manufactured using the stretch blow molted technology.

PET bottles are the preferred containers for most soft drinks as well as for light household cleaners and other consumer goods. Small manufacturers can make custom PET bottles using virgin or recycled PET flakes and a simple, easy-to-obtain manufacturing apparatus. With more and more specialty consumer products manufacturers launching new products, the need for custom-designed PET bottles is increasing. Therefore, entrepreneurs in the consumer products industry are turning to small packaging manufacturers to obtain these bottles. Since the cost of entry is not great and the process is relatively simple, PET bottle manufacturing represents an exciting small business opportunity.

Starting a plastic manufacturing plant, like any other business, requires research and planning. More than just a business, it requires the technical and scientific knowledge of manufacturing plastic as well as the legal requirements of licenses and environmental permits.

Polyvinyl Chloride and poly ethylene triathlete are used in the stretch blow/ molted technique.The plastic bottle made using the stretch blow molded technique are in high demand in the developed nations and so, manufacturing and export of these plastic bottles are in high demand in our country. The PET bottles being transparent, heat resistant, Gas resistant and unbreakable are in demand the beverage packaging industry. Raw material needed for PET, PP, PVC bottles are available in our country. Polymer is one of the most important raw materials used in manufacturing of these plastic products. These products are not only of a use and throw nature but can also be recycled and reused for manufacturing other products.

Instructions

Step 1

This is just brief information on the plastic manufacturing industry which is otherwise a vast project which would require a big industrial setup and monetary investment. It is advised that only after careful market research, calculation, investment plan, calculated profitability risks and guidance of technical experts should one enter the plastic manufacturing business.

Step 2

All these products are made under the supervision and guidance of technical experts, who have vast knowledge and experience and their formulas and plans are followed. Since production of plastic good involved use of chemicals, the manufacturing unit must be setup up away from residential area. Industry experts and scientist should be consulted in understanding and preparing the chemical composition of the plastic and skilled manpower should be used for production. Government has strict laws and regulations regarding use of chemicals in any industry and hence it is important to have all the necessary approvals and sanctions and start production only under supervision of an expert. Plastic is vastly used in packaging beauty products, food products and beverages. Iron and steel containers have been replaced by plastic containers in our kitchens and all the big industries. We often see disposed water and cold drink plastic bottles around us. These bottles are picked up by the rag pickers who collect them and sell it to scrap dealers who later sell it to packaging companies for recycling and reuse.

Step 4

Obtain PET from a reliable supplier. PET is manufactured by polymerizing, or reacting, the chemicals terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol so as to produce pellets of a raw material called polyethylene terephthalate, which is abbreviated to PET. However, because PET is not biodegradable, it is possible to obtain raw PET for bottle manufacturing from shredded recycled plastic bottles. Some small manufacturers use a bottle manufacturing line that actually shreds bottles to produce the necessary raw material.

Step 5

Mold the raw PET pellets or recycled shredded PET into a preform, which resembles a test tube in appearance. This is done using either a separate preform molding machine or a combined one-step apparatus that includes the preform and final molding within one machine. The preform can be made to include the bottle threads, even though it is too thick to serve as an actual bottle until it is stretch molded.

Step 6

Stretch mold the preform. The preform is placed into a mold that corresponds to the shape of the bottle and is contained within the injection molding device. In some cases the original preform tube is cut into shorter lengths before being placed in the stretch-molding device. Hot, pressurized air is blown through a steel tube that pushes the heated preform tube against the mold so that crystallization takes place as the heated preformed PET is forced to take the shape of the inside of the mold.

Step 7

Trim the bottles as necessary to remove excess PET, and then cool them with compressed air before they are either filled on-site or shipped to the location where they will be filled. Hot filling bottles is only possible when they will be used for the sale of foods of a certain degree of acidity, and this should be done only with proper equipment. In addition, pay attention to all pertinent health and safety laws when filling completed PET bottles.

Step 8

Label the bottles as necessary once they are filled. Labels are produced with separate equipment and are not usually provided by PET bottle manufacturers unless the manufacturer also fills the bottles.

Step 3

Potential Market – Oil and Beverage manufacturing companies are the biggest customer for plastic containers. You can manufacture containers of various sizes and designs for these potential clients. Plastic packaging can be provided to beauty products manufacturer, stationary manufacturers, medical companies etc. plastic bottle can be marketed at stationary shops as well.

Tips and Warnings:

Here are a few things to consider in starting a plastic manufacturing plant.

  • Like any other business, planning to start a plastic manufacturing plant involves a lot of planning and research. In fact, one may consider starting a manufacturing plant even more tedious than any other business as one does not only try and consider the business aspect of the plastic manufacturing plant but even the environmental and legal aspects of the business venture. It requires not only the skills of a businessman but even the knowledge and skill of a scientist and engineer. Services of attorneys may also be needed to help maneuver the environmental and license requirement of the government.
  • But before even going into the specific needs of a plastic manufacturing plant, it is first essential to determine what kind of plastic one is looking to produce. There are a lot of plastic products in the market today and there are even more competitors for the said product. One has to carefully plan and research the market and find out which area has a shortage or need for plastic products. In determining the kind of product to produce, one must also consider the skill level needed to produce such product. Do you have the necessary background in plastic making for such product? Do you have the necessary experience in manufacturing such product?
  • After determining the product, it is then necessary to decide the size of the plastic manufacturing plant. Do you plan to work merely at home or start a plant some other place? How much plastic do you want to produce in a given period of time? There are generally three ways in starting a plastic manufacturing plant. One can either buy an existing manufacturing plant. There are a lot of plastic manufacturing plants that are fully furnished and offered for sale in various parts of the world. They cater to a wide variety of plastic products. Another way is to start the manufacturing plant yourself. This means producing the necessary capital or finding investors to do so and building-up the plant yourself. Another way is to start small and try homemade plastic first. If one is just new in the plastic manufacturing business, one can choose to apprentice and work for a plastic plant before starting one’s own business.
  • Once you are knowledgeable of your desired product, the scientific and technical way to manufacture it and the type of business venture you are planning, as well as the location of your plant, you can start looking into the license and permit requirements of the government. Oftentimes, environmental pre-conditions are also necessary before a permit or license is granted.

  • For small businesses and newcomers to PET bottle manufacturing, a custom one-step injection device, which combines preform molding with stretch molding, is recommended. Such machines are more cost-effective for small runs and are easier to use with custom bottle molds. It is now possible to purchase a single-step molding device for PET bottle manufacturing at a reasonable price from factories in the Far East that specialize in this type of machinery. Used machinery is also available and may be the best way for new manufacturers to test the market for their custom PET containers.

  • Whenever possible, use recycled PET. PET creates problems when disposed of in landfills, and more and more localities are promoting PET recycling. Since PET from used bottles can be shredded and reused in place of virgin PET pellets, recycling is very efficient; it truly eliminates the dangers to the environment and disposal problems that PET bottles create.

  • Keep in mind, however, that some recycled PET may not meet a client's standards. This is the case when recycled PET contains shredded bottles of different colors that will not produce the color of bottle that the client needs for specific products.
