The beetroot, also known in North America as the table beet, garden beet, red or golden beet, or informally simply as the beet, refers to any of the cultivated varieties of beet (Beta vulgaris) grown for their edible taproots, especially B. vulgaris L. subsp. conditiva. They are among the most commonly encountered varieties in North America, Central America, and Europe.
If you want to start beetroot farming, you should consider
these tips. There are many things that you should learn and since
commercial farming can be a bit expensive, make sure that you use these
tips especially when picking the ideal location for the beetroots.
With knowledge, you can get high yields.
Beetroot Farming Basics
Weeds can destroy other plants but in the case of the Chenopodiaceae
family, they are beneficial to agriculture. You can find many beetroot
farms in Queensland but there are also areas where beetroot is grown for
personal use. The best beetroots in the market have reached their
maturity in a short span of time. Beetroot is ideal to grow in cool
regions like the southern states. Their tolerance for frosts is
moderate, so you need to pay close attention to the climate. In order to
grow beetroot for commercial farming, you should have adequate
knowledge about planting or growing them.
Start by doing some basic research on beetroot. Spend time in
learning the basics and after that, you can now find the perfect
location for beetroot farming. Beetroot can be grown in almost any type
of soil but they grow best in well drained, loose, and deep loamy soil.
If you plant beetroot on crust soils are heavy clay soils, problems can
occur with the plant’s establishment and the roots can also be
misshapen. The ideal soil pH is 5.8 to 7.0 but it can still tolerate
acidic soils (around 7.6). Try to avoid acidic soil because it can lead
to nutrient deficiency. If you are planting in heavier soils, try
ripping or you can also plough the soil.
Commercially Growing Beetroot
Beetroot can be planted any time of the year. However, if you plant
beetroot during the summer, it can reduce the quality of the roots. The
ideal temperature for seed germination is 4.5 to 30˚C. Take note of the
seeding rate and it should be 3 to 5 kg/ha but this should be based on
the needed crop density. Sow the seeds at 1.2 to 2.5 cm deep and each
plant should be 60 to 70 cm apart. It’s up to you to plant them in
single rows or double rows. For commercial beetroot farming, you can
also grow then in multiple rows. Center spacing should be at 1.5 to 1.8
meters.
Every bed can consist of 3 to 5 rows that are 30 cm apart. Feed the
plants properly with fertilizer to get the needed nutrition. You can
drill down the fertilizer on the sides of the plant or you can also
cultivate them. Learn the ways to control weeds, insects, and diseases.
You may need to consider buying harvesting machines so that the task can
be finished in no time. The harvested beetroots will be processed. You
can expect about 35 tons/ha in terms of yields.
